Note that cold process soap requires the use of sodium hydroxide, aka lye. Lye is not present in the final product because it reacts with the oils in a process called saponification. This creates soap. Many people find that natural soap is gentler on their skin than detergent-based "beauty bars", and making your own soap allows you to control exactly what goes into your final product.
