Cover letters: Power edits!

15

15 per hour - Virtual OK - Posted Apr 10, 2017

Your cover letter is your first and best foot forward toward that new job, school, grant, etc. Are you making that step with style, grace and aplomb, or with a thud?

Share with me the best draft of your cover letter, or even some thorough notes, and tell me as much as you can about yourself and the position you are pursuing. I'll give you honest and in-depth feedback about how to do it better.

Among things I'll look at:

Voice. Are you engaging, lively, someone the hiring manager would want on board their team?
Precision. Are you using language that says: I'm the best fit for this job, and this is the job for me?
Professionalism. Is it all spelled correctly? Are sentences complete? Does this person understand grammar, basic sentence construction, how to open and close professional correspondence?
Appearance (if presented in PDF format): Is the font style, size and spacing pleasing to the eye? Are line breaks used appropriately? Is there enough, but not too much, text on the page?

Feel free to request feedback on any specific category not mentioned above. I look forward to helping you in your search!

Training & Qualifications

As a hiring manager, I've seen my share of good and bad cover letters. As a professor, mentor, writing coach and friend, I've reviewed countless cover letters with an eye toward being smarter and sharper. I can work on yours, too! I've most recently been a Distinguished Professor at the University of Montana School of Journalism, but I've taught at the Poynter Institute (a school for journalists), Ringling College of Art and Design, and elsewhere. I've also guest lectured and consulted at colleges and with private clients around the world.

Availability & Preferences

Fairly free during weekdays.

Trading Preference: I prefer being paid in simbi

About Ron Reason

I’m a visual storyteller. I consult on editorial design, strategy and brand. I occasionally share my love for these interests in the classroom. Next stop: Chennai, India. Across 36 countries I’ve ...helped marry words + images, with media partners seeking reinvention and students who appreciate the same. Notable client-collaborators: The NCAA. The Harvard Crimson. Standard Media Group (Nairobi, Kenya). The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Gulf News and Emirates Evening Post (Dubai, UAE). Advertising Age. Modern Healthcare. Catholic Health World. Hindustan Times (Delhi). The San Francisco Examiner. The Dallas Morning News. The Chicago Reader. I’ve worked with some of the largest publishers in Brazil, Iceland, Spain, Singapore, Denmark and Nigeria on the reinvention of storytelling strategies, newsroom reorganization, creativity and leadership development. Notable teaching appointments have included, most recently, the University of Montana School of Journalism, as well as Poynter, the Ringling College of Art and Design, and the University of South Florida. I've been blessed by guest lecture invitations at home and abroad. At the heart of all my work: What's the real story here? Who's affected? Says one reference, a former editor for Advertising Age: "Ron's work is not only aesthetically pleasing, but actually helps build a better publication that gives more (and more useful) information to the audience – in other words, he can actually help you improve your journalism, not just the look and navigability of your product.” I share lessons about my approach and my work at my regularly updated blog: www.ronreason.com/designwithreason/ Skills: News judgment. Empathy. Critical thinking. Teaching and public speaking. Writing and editing. "Live" reporting, blogging and social media. Editorial design and redesign. Photography (composition and editing). Social media strategy and execution. Branding and marketing. Diplomatic coaching and critique. show more
