Advice for Pet owners
I can offer insight to a wide variety of pet related general health and behavioral issues. I can offer personal opinions and reviews for industry related products and services.
***I cannot legally offer medical advice***, but I can explain previously diagnosed issues with more clarity, using relatable language and let you know what to expect moving forward. I can dispel myths, help people receive a faster and more accurate diagnosis from their vet, identify situations where a second opinion would be encouraged and suggest solutions to help with administering prescribed medications to animals more easily and effectively.
I can also offer field advice to new technicians and anyone considering a career in the veterinary industry. I can also offer advice to new managers and less experienced technicians that may be looking into trying a different area of focus.
Training & Qualifications
I am a veterinary surgical nursing assistant with over 16 years of experience. I spent 11 of those years in a large mixed general practice that also included a large boarding facility. During that time I had also learned the art of managing staff by training and coaching a team of up to 20 seasonal employees with great success. The next 5 years of my career were spent working in a small feline only clinic and helping a new VMD that had just purchased the practice gain public awareness.
I successfully marketed the clinic using social media and by hosting, promoting, organizing and presenting in many public events within the community. Presently I work in a very large multi specialty 24 hour veterinary hospital in the surgery department.

About Melissa Johnston
I am a Veterinary Surgical Nursing assistant with 16 years of experience in the field of Veterinary technology. I never pursued certification in veterinary technology. Growing up, I had always bee...n unwaveringly certain that I was destined for fame as a Broadway theater actor or world class artist. My career began when I took what I believed to be a fun temporary summer job as a kennel attendant at a local Animal Hospital. The Doctor that owned the practice felt that I had demonstrated natural talents and skill when called upon to aid the medical staff. She asked me to stay on after the season ended to see how I felt in a position as a veterinary assistant and encouraged me to consider a career in the field. As it happened, I did remarkably well and discovered that I was able to perform the duties with considerable success. I also had come to the harsh realization that my singing voice is distinctly similar to that of a distressed llama and that there's a very good reason that artists are known to be starving. That's how my career began. I have since developed a deeply held passion for my work and simply can't imagine spending my time in any other field. I spent my first 10 years working in general practice at a large multi service hospital that included a large boarding facility. During my time there I gained valuable experience with administrative management. I was responsible for hiring, training and coaching new seasonal employees and also developed very successful team building techniques. After that I worked at a smaller feline-only clinic for the next 6 years and gained additional experience with marketing, social media management and organizing public events. Presently I work in a very large multispecialty 24 hour hospital as a Surgical Nursing Assistant but my newest interest is in writing. The have had a wide variety of pets throughout my life and due to my profession, many with complicated health issues that I've learned special techniques to help manage with greater success. show moreOpen to other proposals
