Basics of Decentralized Blockchains

10

10 per hour - Virtual OK - Posted Jan 15, 2017

Decentralized Blockchains, in a nutshell, are a way to replicate physical transactions in a virtual environment (This is a very simple description and does nowhere near describe the true technical elements of it, but it works for now). You can transfer any assortment of goods or services to someone without the need of a third-party such as a Bank, a Corporation, or your creepy uncle Tom. One analogy I like to use, is the Apple Analogy. If I handed you an apple, you can verify that the apple was transferred from my hand to yours without the need of any outside force (like a bank or a friend). You could know that you now have total control over that apple and it is now your property. But what if this was a digital apple? How could you know, that if I sent you a digital apple (say through email or a file server), that it would leave my possession and only be controlled by you? It's tough, because I can send you an apple digitally, and still have a copy with me. We just turned one apple into two which doesn't replicate that physical transaction (called the Double Spending Problem). Here is where Decentralized Blockchains step in to sort out this dilemma.

Basically what we will be doing, is understanding the basics of Decentralized Blockchains. This will include how they work, the security involved, why they are so important, and how they can be implemented in future applications. If you seem more interested and want to become more involved, I am open up to different ideas whether it includes meeting up again to go over the finer details and how you can learn more or even possible collaboration efforts!

Training & Qualifications

To start, I hold a strong background in IT and Computer Science topics which can be shown in my numerous tech related organizations and with my class history. I picked up a side hobby of learning more about Decentralized Blockchains and began my studies in December 2016. As of now, I am writing a 150 page document on everything you need to know about this subject. Seeing as this is WAY too big for most readers, I will be breaking this paper down into a small 5-10 page paper for an easy read and a solid starting point. After I have done that, I will be performing a research experiment delving into numerous high concept elements to get a better understanding of how they interact and the possibilities of its implementations in every day life.

Availability & Preferences

Free almost every day with the exception of a few meetings here and then.

Trading Preference: I’m flexible, just hit me up!

About Taylor Thomas

Throughout my life I have always had an eye for technology. I always wanted to learn about all the latest and greatest things being made. It doesn't hurt that I come from a background of family member...s who are very tech oriented. In high school I learned a lot about the kind of field I wanted to pursue while getting a lot of general skills. I realized I wanted to go more into software development and computer programming. On the side, I gained skills in interviewing, public speaking, and general business knowledge. These skills were better improved through my involvement with Minnesota Business Venture (MBV) and DECA. After my first semester of college, I decided to dig in deep and really search for what I wanted to do with my life. During second semester I grabbed another concentration, major, and minor which will give me a much better understanding of computers in general. Currently, I am declared in the major Applied Mathematics and Computer Science with a concentration in Software Development and Information Assurance and Cyber Security with a double major in Information and Communication Technologies with a minor in Computer Networking and Information Technology. Definitely a tongue twister of a degree, but basically it means I will be studying Programming, Cyber Security, Networking, and Business Technologies. Along with that, I am also the Treasurer of five organizations on my campus which definitely helps me stay involved and constantly moving around. To sweeten the deal, I work about 23 hours a week on the side in a bakery/dishroom. Studying two majors and a minor, being deeply involved with five organizations, and working on the side definitely takes up a lot of my time. It's hard work and some days are longer than others, but as long as I'm following my dream, every second is worth it. I hope I can take what I learn through internships and my schooling to go into a field in Software Development, Systems Administration, or Cyber Security. show more
