I can help you find an unlocked phone that will fit your budget. I've been buying unlocked phones for years, and I don't by the latest, greatest. Nor do I buy the cheapest. I shop in the space inbetween. I've found some real bargains, and found a few lemons, but will gladly share my experience with you to find a reasonably priced fully functional phone.
I specialize in Android phones, because there is such a variety of them, but I help my wife shop for iPhones, so I'm not unfamiliar with them. The advantage in bringing your own phone is you can get exactly what you want rather than settling for what your phone company wants you to have. I really like having choice in this matter, and I suspect you will too. It will sometimes mean a trade-off, but work out the priorities ahead of time and you don't feel like you're losing anything.

I've been a programmer for over a decade, and been very frustrated with my phone carriers for longer than that. I have had to learn how to tear apart, rebuild and even write some code for phones. No, I don't build apps, I make sure my phones work the way I want them to.
