How to be an effective debater
20
Whether it is formal debate competitions, or discussions we get into on a regular basis with people espousing different opinions, the skill of persuasion is one I have found to be very useful in my life. It might be useful for you as well!
In our session, I will go over any of the following points that you are interesting in exploring -
- The main tenets of logic
- Different debate formats that exist (can debate the pros and cons of each)
- How to structure a logical argument
- How to pick out flaws in an opponents arguments
- Tell you about some common logical fallacies that people mistakenly use
- Other common strategies to employ whilst debating
- Recommend good examples of debates on relevant topics
There are other topics I find interesting to discuss such as, the benefits of aggression in a debate! Any other topics you want to bring up would also be very welcome.
We can even have a mock debate session!
I can cater to several different formats, including MUNs, which I have extensive experience with.
Training & Qualifications
I have been debating since I was 12 years old and am the president of the debate society at my university. I've given presentations on debating as well.
Here is the only video that exists of me on stage. This is at the World Scholars Cup, and is part of the debate showcase for the top debaters in the competition. Keep in mind it is an on-the-spot debate and I only had a few minutes to prepare my argument after being given my topic on stage. The topic was, 'Is love a mental disorder?' for which I was assigned to the Affirmative side. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=En8cwD9KIDg)
I have won several awards for debating, MUNs, elocution competitions, and have given a Tedx speech. Message me if you'd like to see a complete list before proceeding.
