List of Special Topic YA/Kids Books

5

5 per unit - Virtual OK - Posted May 25, 2017

Have a unique topic you're looking to explore though books for children or teens? Let me compile a bakers dozen (13) list of titles for you to explore.

I will use my knowledge of books for kids and teens, plus my skills navigating the NoveList database, to curate a list especially for you. If you prefer, I can focus on a particular *type* of book (fiction, non-fiction, comics, audio, etc.)

Depending on the complexity of the request, some lists will take longer to curate than others, but I promise to keep you informed of my progress along the way. Shoot me a message and let's make a list of new favorite titles!

Please note 3 things:

1 - I will not create "grade level specific" recommendations. Lexile, AR, and other grade-level based systems vary quite a bit from one another, and children in the same grade have widely different abilities. Plus, reading level does not take into account the target audience or content (example: "50 Shades of Gray" is written at around a "4th grade reading level;" it's *not* a title that is appropriate to recommend to a 4th grader.) If you are concerned with a child improving their reading skills, I firmly belief in reading quantity (read a lot) and quality experience (an enjoyable reading experience will lead to more reading) are much more important for long-term literacy rather than pushing to "read at grade level." **I WILL make sure the books I recommend are of /interest/ to a general age group, such as preschoolers, older teens, etc. as requested**

2 - Every guardian believes different content is appropriate their kids. I will try my best to give a general idea of content in the sexual, violent, and foul language categories, to help you make a decision. Ultimately though, you must decide if a book is appropriate for your reader. If you have a particular concern, please let me know when we make a deal so I can keep an extra close eye out for particular content.

3 - I will keep your name and identifying information confidential, however, I may share these custom lists with others if I think they may be of interest to other families. :)

Training & Qualifications

An avid reader my whole life, for the past several years, I have worked at a public library. While I primarily work in the teen department, I frequently assist patrons in the children's department.

She was wonderful! She did more than give me a list of books, she organized and described each one. It was even better than I expected! You can tell ...she put a lot of work into this, and I am extremely grateful. show more

About Molly Kellam

FYI: My schedule is a bit unpredictable, but Sundays are my dedicated "Simbi Days." Please rest assured if you've messaged me I will, at the latest, reply to you by the following Sunday. :) About m...e, short-short version: Nerdy reader, maker, artist, and rebel with too many causes. I am curious to the point of annoyance and rarely sitting still. I can't wait to meet you and am excited to see how combining our strengths can benefit everyone! What's my day job? I happily work at a public library in the YA department during the week, helping teens discover what the library can offer them and planning wide variety of events. Occasionally I work weekends at a local art studio where people drop in to paint, glaze, party, and create. ~~Flashback~~ I grew up in Tennessee. My school path was a bit nontraditional, and I wound up attending Converse College at a young age, where I made many of my best friends to this day, discovered a great deal about how I work best, and earned a BA double majoring in Computer Science and Studio Art, along with completing my liberal arts classes. After graduation I married and, like many of my generation in the "new economy," have bounced around a wide variety of jobs, moving between South Carolina and Georgia, and also applied my skills in a variety of unpaid positions out of passion. While the past few years have seen me a bit more settled, I still passionately pursue new knowledge, skills, self-fulfillment, and want to leave this world a better place. I'm excited to be here on Simbi with like-minded individuals.show more
