What is Capoeira?

*** This would be an introductory beginners course ***
To give a little background on Capoeira it started in Brazil and was a dance that the slaves created to train themselves to escape there captures. It is one of the most beautiful things that has developed from oppression and it is a sacred art form that is devoted to cultivating positive energy - Axé (pronounced AAhshay) with in the mind, body, and world. You will find a lot of smiling and silliness in the dance because your opponent tries to use trickery to catch you off guard. Capoeira is played between two people and it does not really focus on knocking your opponent down, it is rather emphasized on skill. It is set up in a circle called the Roda (pronounced Hoda) Each participating member adds there energy (Axé) through clapping and singing. While some members play instruments to set the pace of the game when the two enter and dance within the circle.
There are a couple different styles and sub versions of Capoeira. The two main ones are Capoeira Angola and Capoeira Regional. Capoeira Angola is a slower more direct version of the game while Capoeira Regional is face paced with lots of offensive maneuvers. Both are fun but the style I like to practice is Angola.
So things to be aware of.
It is played with bare feet you can wear sneakers but its not recommended
You should wear comfortable pants (no restrictive clothing)
Lots of kicks and cartwheels - its a whole body work out
I would say that anyone can do it if they really want to try or just see what it is about. But there are skills developed like round house kicks, hand stands, standing on your head, back bends, cartwheels, profuse sweating...
Hydration is a must
Warning ---> The music gets into your soul and you will learn Portuguese and someday want to travel to Brazil :)
Training & Qualifications
I have been playing Capoeira on and off since 2008. I do have to admit I am a little rusty but would love to shed some light of this amazing martial art to others. I would show you the basics and bring you pretty far but you will soon want to practice with others to enhance your skills.
