Beginner drum lessons/odd timings

35

35 per hour - Virtual OK - Posted Apr 13, 2017

Are you wanting to play drums? Wanting to know what the deal is with time signatures and why they're so weird? And just wtf is a paradiddle anyway?
If you're an advanced, experienced drummer, you can probably smoke me, but if you're a beginner, or maybe a moderate player and you just have trouble with odd times, I can help!
You can also just give me a song and I can tell you what time it's in and help you figure it out, or help you write your own beats. Just hit me up!

Training & Qualifications

I've been playing drums for over a decade, have been in 2 bands, and am currently trying to get work doing film scores (I also play bass and guitar).
I also worked as a math tutor in college, and I really enjoy teaching people just about anything, no matter how difficult, as long as they have the desire to learn.

Tuesdays mostly, but this will be changing soon.

About Jeff Simmons

I have experience in video production, music performance and writing, tech support, and a little bit of programming and screenwriting. I also know a lot about floatation therapy. I can offer a lot to... beginners, for sure (jack of all trades, master of none). I'm also looking at building my developer skills enough to finish a few raspberry Pi projects, and I'm also working on a short film I may need to get a cast/crew for. I've been going to local shows (live music) and supporting the scene in Springfield, MO since about 2001, and I'm excited for any opportunities to collaborate, teach, or just jam with people, although my style is a little weird for some. I primarily play a long-abandoned form of bastardized grungy metal, combined with some progressive elements thrown in for fun (because my life is complicated), on a bass that's split between 3 amps, with an octave (up) pedal on one of them to play the lead. I have a looper on the other 2, and will often start a loop, then play drums over it for fun... but it's been really hard to write anything I'm especially proud of and feels complete enough to record or play live. I do have almost a full album worth of songs I've been working on for a while, with only 1 so far utilizing the double-bass method. List of gear upon request. I've also written several short screenplays, many bad, but a handful of decent ones, and am frequently trying to find ways to get them started into actual films, but I might eventually just start giving them to others to produce, direct, etc, since I'm not quite sure what I'm doing, and it's incredibly hard to get people motivated these days, especially when you can't afford to pay them. I've been a professional videographer for several years doing event video production, but I'm really just wanting to get into more narrative material and content creation, which is part of the reason we started our podcast (don't worry, it's really basically my roommate's podcast, so I'm not completely batshit insane yet). I'm also trying to learn programming (more urgently) and love the things that can be done with the Raspberry Pi. There's really no excuse for not learning all you can in the information age, and the things you can do are astounding. I haven't done it yet (nor would I have a reason to), but I've basically determined how I could open my garage door by flipping a switch in Minecraft. That makes me pee a little with excitement in my nerd pants. A few of the reasons for this is because not only would I like to move into a different IT field and do more development (I had a job as a developer for about 6 months. Someone hire me!), but it's also to help us build automation for the float spa. Floatation therapy is awesome, and if you've never done it, just, well, do it. Or ask me about it. Seriously. Oh, I also built my pedalboard for my guitar pedals, and I'd like to make more stuff out of wood, specifically with pallets, if anyone is into that kind of thing...show more
