illustrator for political book
I'm writing a book Cognitive Politics [ cognitivepolitics.org ] . It's pretty heavy, and I want to lighten it up just a little bit with illustrations. I think my ideal illustrations would be a bit zen or minimalist, helping people keep track of complex ideas.
The illustrations are very message-focused: for example the chapter about leadership, community and sacredness needs an image that basically acts as a mneumonic for each of those ideas. The table of contents needs a tree design that has a root or branch for each chapter. I just want to be up front -- this can often make it a little difficult, I'm looking for someone excited to figure out the "why," who won't draw a table of contents tree with an extra branch for a non-existent chapter :-)
I'd like to start small, hiring a few people to do one image, and then pick someone who could do a few hours work. I'm happy to give you credit in the book if you're the illustrator!

Suggestions on getting started: you could show me something similar you've done, or suggest if you want to draw the chapter-tree or the iconic drawing that represents leadership + community + sanctity (probably a barn-raising with a leader and light coming through the clouds unless you have a better idea) from the above document? Those are the hardest two illustrations. (I haven't found many illustrators on Simbi who design non-cartoonishly -- been responding to people without portfolios who can draw the tree as a simple test if we work well together for 10 simbi and professionals charging 50simbi/hour.)
Thanks -- looking forward to creating something together with you!
Breathe,
Stephen
