Ask a Wildlife Rehabilitator
25
When people find out I have my wildlife rehab certification, I get asked lot of questions - and I don't mind answering if I can. I'm not a legal expert though, and while I can certainly help with some Canadian and American laws/permit requirements, I certainly don't know the international laws for every country and even province-to-province or state-to-state can vary widely and can be very complex. I'm also NOT a veterinarian, though I do work closely with vets. Mostly I can help with ethical and practical questions. I don't mind answering questions in the least - especially if it means a positive outcome for the wildlife involved, and I will straight up tell you if I don't know the answer.. Don't ever feel self-conscious about trying to do the right thing.
Examples I have been asked:
"I found a baby bird, what do I feed it?"
"Can you identify this bird/reptile/amphibian for me?"
"What is this thing that hit my window? Is it dead?"
"I found a <insert animal here> that's acting weird. Is it injured? Should I do something?"
"How do I keep snakes out of my garden?"
"What types of rat traps are actually humane?"
"What should I do about bears in my backyard?"
"Should I feed bread to ducks? What should I put in my bird feeders?"
"I found a dead bird. Can I keep its feathers? What should I do with it?"
"I found an injured <insert species here> and I healed it - can I keep it as a pet?"
"I found an injured <insert species here> and it's suffering - what should I do?"
"How do I become a wildlife rehabilitator?"
Training & Qualifications
I'm a certified wildlife rehabilitator with the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council. I also help design/edit reptile rehabilitation courses and help scientists conduct their field studies in ethical and non-invasive ways. I have worked at the American Bald Eagle Foundation in Alaska, where I earned my raptor handling certification, and completed the Institute of Bird Population's bird banding course. I volunteer with rattlesnake population studies all over Western Canada (mark/recapture with microchipping), and have assisted with biological projects and surveys internationally.
