About Debra Houchins
I am a technical and creative writer and editor currently seeking freelance and writing opportunities.
My previous experience includes two years teaching composition at Virginia Tech. During that time, I also served as an editor for the Mining and Materials Engineering Department working on dissertations, theses, and proposals. I worked as a tutor in the university's writing center, coaching students through a wide range of professional writing. In the future I plan to use my creative and technical skills to work in a creative field in media. I am actively seeking jobs that will eventually bring me closer to this goal.
I also spent four years working for Virginia Tech's student newspaper, filling various roles including writer, opinions editor, features editor, and copy editor. My publications include satirical nonfiction in a nationally distributed text book,as well as fiction in various literary magazines and online. I've edited for an online music Website for three years and interviewed prominent Japanese bands.
I believe in balance in both life and education. As an undergraduate I pursued a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a focus in neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in creative writing. I specialized in fiction and published in several university literary magazines.
While attending undergrad, I worked an average of 20 hours a week in editing, retail, teaching, child care, and modeling.
My passion is in video games and comics.
