Props research and design

50

50 per hour - Virtual OK - Posted Apr 30, 2017

Searching for something to round out your next cosplay, larp, or costume of any sort? I'm here for you.

Do you need help coming up with research and concept for theatrical show settings and small goods? I'm your gal.

Anything from swords to handbags, 50s cigarettes to viking shields, I've got you covered. The process is as follows:

Talk to me about what you're looking for, where the concept comes from, share any source material you have, any specifics you require. I'll do my research and be in touch with you- asking you questions, offering research images, narrowing things down until we've found your perfect fit. Once we've pinned down what you're after, I'll make a basic design including: scale, paint/color/fabric options, visual reference (ex. photos, images, sketches, or draftings) and specific materials used. Overall, enough information to accurately build this item. Most likely this will come to you in pdf form.

So in total you will have: Research documentation, research images, all of my sources, and a complete pdf of what your item should look like and the basics of how it can be built.

Depending on the size and complexity of the item and research, I may be willing to research and design up to three costume/special items or up to 30 set dressing items so that you can get a fair deal. Just talk to me about what you need and we'll go from there.

The whole process can take between 5 to 14 days, so if you have any time restraints, please let me know up front.

You may be asking, Who is this person? Why are they so incredibly talented? Can they really do this for me?

I'm glad you asked. My name is Tori. I went to school for this stuff- a BA in theatrical studies focusing on properties design and carpentry. I've designed and built stuff like this professionally on and off for five years. I'm not in a place to have my own shop to build things these days, but I still love the research and design and I really enjoy helping people make awesome things. That's me in a nutshell.

Lastly- you must attribute my design to me. My name's got to be attached to the design or design process somewhere. If you use my research or designs, or base something off of my designs, just include me in the program, official documentation, or name drop me whenever someone asks about this awesome piece.

I look forward to hearing from you! I'm very excited.

About Tori Ames

My name is Tori. I have a BA in theatrical studies focusing on properties design and carpentry. I've designed and built props professionally on and off for five years. I'm not in a place to have my ow...n shop to build things these days, but I still love the research and design and I really enjoy helping people make awesome things. The coolest prop I've ever made was a set of giant monster hands. They were black and orange and extended from the forearm of the wearer about three feet out. Each hand had seven long, pointed, fully jointed fingers that made a wonderfully creepy sound when dragged along any surface. My second coolest prop was a set of bright pink and glittery tommy guns. Outside of props and carpentry, I have a particular talent for making chainmail jewelery and small armor pieces. I can teach you how to make your own, give you lots of resources to help you, and even assist you in designing your own piece. My parents have always been history buffs and been into historical medieval reenactments- making their own props and costumes, and in my dad's case this also meant armor and weapons. He first taught me how to make chainmail when I was 14, and since then it's been hard to quit. When I was 16 I hosted my first chainmail class, where I taught a group of peers how to make their own rings and two beginners knots. I also love to read and write - poetry, fiction narratives, non fiction articles and studies, the works. I'm happy to write for you, proof read, or just give you some critical constructive advice. That's me in a nutshell. If you have any questions, just ask! show more
