Sound Gear - recommendations/advice

10

10 for fulfilling my request - Virtual OK - Posted Feb 06

Hi Simbi! I'm looking for an expert Sound engineer or video blogger that can advise me on compact, sturdy, quality sound gear that I'll need for recording webinars and travel video blogging. I'm in the process of preparing training webinars for an upcoming software roll-out at work, for which I will need high quality sound. I'm also prepping for a big international trip in fall 2018 during which I plan to video blog, including man-on-the-street interviews. If possible, I want to invest in sound gear that will fit both purposes.

Do you have experience recording webinars and/or posting weekly YouTube videos? If so,

What sound gear works best for capturing your audio?
What do I need to be aware of when purchasing sound gear?
Do you use a USB mic (i.e. Blue Yeti) for voiceover narration and/or instructional purposes?
Do you plug a lavalier mic into your smartphone for on-the-go video/sound capture?
Do you use a DSLR mounted boom/wind muff for the more professional stuff?
Is it crucial to wear headphones during capture/playback? If so, what works great without being too over the top?
What kind of photo/video gear works seamlessly with your sound equipment?

I'm looking for the gear that is better than amateur quality but maybe without the $$ of pro gear. I have Macs and PCs at home, and I currently use a Samsung S8 Active smartphone to gather video/sound. (also have an old Canon Rebel XT DSLR that does not shoot video, so I will be upgrading to a video+photo DSLR camera before fall 2018, if you have recommendations)

Thanks for your help!

About Shue LaRue

Life's a great teacher - if you're curious, exploratory, and attentive, you can learn constantly. Have you heard that the 5 people surrounding you are an amazing indicator of your success? I truly... believe it. I grew up in an enormous, scientific, do-it-yourself family. We didn't have a TV in the house, and at the time, this simultaneously embarrassed and pissed me off. But we DID have books, music, National Geographic, stories, experiments, physical competitions, and countless negotiations. Think "Captain Fantastic" in a town of 3200 people - yup, we were those weirdos! Honestly, lack of dolla bills was a great motivator for all of us - we learned how to be resourceful and proactive. We may have started out with paper routes and lemonade stands, but we went on to become high powered engineers and world travelers. We crafted aromatherapy products, candles and jewelry. We started our own companies, jury-rigged our POS cars, developed gluten free recipes, and entertained ourselves with a crappy 8mm camera we picked up at a garage sale. (And FYI, this was waaaay before YouTube was even an idea.) Bottom line: if we wanted it, we figured out how to make it or trade it. Once you have been initiated into this informal economy, it's kinda hard to to go back to the regular way of doing things. When everyone has a specialty, bartering becomes a practical, efficient strategy, and makes great business sense. Bartering gives us all the opportunity to consult with the experts, and negotiate the exact thing you're looking for, rather than making do with a product or service that was packaged for the masses. I'm a photographer, a writer, a music lover, a creator of compilations, silly songs and videos, a yogi, a chef, a feng shui-er, a reflexologist, traveler, and professional brainstormer. I love to dive into something new, iron out the bugs, then pass onto others what worked for me. And I love to learn from others who are passionate experts in some field or skill that I don't have. Have I mentioned that bartering rocks?!show more
