Blood (Donation) Buddy

10 value - Virtual OK - Posted Mar 09, 2017

Afraid of needles? Squeamish around blood? So was I! No big deal; you just need some extra support there to take your mind off of things.

I will accompany you to the Canadian Blood Services clinic on Oak Street in Vancouver to help you through your first donation (doesn't have to be the first!). Other Lower Mainland clinics may work too depending on my schedule.

I will chat with you in advance to help you mentally prepare for the donation process, answer any questions you may have, and help you register for a whole blood donation. If you'd like me to be there for the actual donation, we'll figure out a mutually agreeable time, and possibly arrange a meet beforehand for coffee if you feel like you need some day-of prep time.

When you're in the chair, I'll distract you, bring you cookies and juice, and answer any questions you may have. I'll even share some secret techniques to make your donation go faster! If you feel lightheaded, I'll get the nurse and they'll make sure your needs are attended to until you feel up to it. Before that though, I'll be sure to help you take a photo so you can paste it all over social media. It'll encourage your friends to donate and make you look like a superstar!

I've been donating platelets and other blood products for over a decade, with this post marking my 149th lifetime donation. This offer is a way to help me celebrate my 150th donation (scheduled for March 23, 2017).

Training & Qualifications

A 149-time donor, a first-aider, and an excellent seeker of the best cookies and juice boxes that Canadian Blood Services provides gratis with every visit. I'm pretty good storytelling too, so if you need a distraction, I'm your man!

Availability & Preferences

Varies, but I'm at the Oak Street clinic every second Thursday from 16:45 to 18:00, so booking around those times is an instant approval from me (as I'll already be there)!

Trading Preference: Pay it forward – pass on the good deed!

About Owen James

I'm an archery enthusiast, an ex-swimming instructor and lifeguard, an educator, a leader within the federal government, and an associate career/life coach. I've had 11 jobs in the last 10 years (with...in the same organization), and have a gift for redefining my jobs as something that is both rewarding for me and beneficial to the organization. I guess that's just one of the benefits of working in a sector that was the polar opposite of what I had planned during school. I'm also a biweekly blood/platelet donor, and am passionate about getting others out to donate blood regularly. I'm actually one donation away from my 150th! Canadian Blood Services is always in need of donors, and we don't need *all* our blood *all* the time... I normally keep to myself due to a bit of social anxiety, but am branching out after being encouraged to get myself out into the community. I'm hoping Simbi can help me get out, make new friends, and help me learn more about myself by giving me an opportunity to share the random contents of my brain. More insight into me? I used to draw and paint a ton, and have designed quite a few tattoo designs for friends, but my art supplies have been gathering dust for the last few years. I'd love to pick it up again, but I've yet to experience the spark that'll re-light that fire. My next challenge is finding a local maker space nearby to try my hand at woodworking; if anyone out there is willing to take an apprentice for a few hours, let me know!show more
