Learn to make Yarn as Unique as you

50

50 per session - Virtual OK - Posted May 17, 2017

I will teach you the basics of how to use a drop spindle, working with fiber to make custom yarn for your weaving, knitting or crochet project. It takes some practice so I will show you how, you can practice for a while and then come back to ask questions or for a critique of your progress.

Spinning is an ancient activity, for centuries you would not find a woman without a spindle in her possession and at all times, no matter her class or circumstance. The time it would take to create enough "thread" to weave enough cloth to clothe people required this. In many cultures the men joined in too, especially the young and the elderly. Today spinning remains alive in many cultures, in Peru, Tibet and others. When I spin, I feel that I am creating the thread of humanity, of culture that connects me to the past, my great great grandmother was a spinner, she learned from her grandmother and she spun the wool of her very own sheep. I did not know this the first time I spun yarn, but I did feel this connection.

Training & Qualifications

I have been a fiber artist for more than 20 years. It all started with a fiber class I took, just out of high school. My instructor was well trained with a focus on creating fine art - in 1981 she was creating "tree sweaters" and dangling fiber alongside the seaweed and ocean waves in La Jolla. My passion for spinning and fiber began in this class. A visit from the retired former instructor provided a lesson on drop spinning and working at the wheel, I was mesmerized! These are the seeds of my adventure, a passion that I would love to share with you.

About Marianne O'Barr

I am an artist and a teacher. I am a classically trained sculptor with more experience teaching the figure in the Southern California area than anyone else. I have had my work in prestigious exhibit...s in museums and galleries, I have had solo exhibits, and I have created public art. I was selected as an "Artist Ambassador" to go to China and meet other artists from around the world, to tour all of China and to speak at the International Women's Conference at SIAS University in Xinzheng. I was lucky to meet great teachers that led me to these successes. I studied from artists trained in Europe and in the United States. I have also learned from the many artists I have met along the way, projects that I have completed, and through teaching, you never learn so much as you do when you are teaching. Learning to teach is another thing. Great teachers grow with each course they teach, with each student they happen upon. Over the years I learned how to reach nearly every student and the quality of the work produced by my students grew. My first semester that I taught, I had other teachers come to me wanting to know all of my secrets, and yet when I look back at those days, I am embarrassed by the inexperience that I started with compared to where I am now. If I could live my dream, I would have a large enough space where my husband (also a classically trained sculptor) and I could take on the teaching of 40 students at a time, with the dream of creating sculptors as trained as they were in the early 1900s America. I would love to find a way to do this free of charge for our students, and make a modest living (enough to eat, keep my home, have a reliable car and do a little traveling). Representational sculpture is becoming a lost art with "scary Lucy's" and bad pope sculptures and even American heroes and former presidents suffer in bad sculpture to be remembered by. I love art, I love artists and meeting people who love art. I love sharing my knowledge and inspiring artist to achieve to their best. Be sure to say hi to me, I am so happy to meet you!show more
