Fiction Critique: Up to 2000 Words
20
I will read your short story of up to 2000 words and provide thoughts on:
- Characters
- Plot
- Setting
- Syntax: word choice, sentence structure, or flow
- Aesthetic: mood, theme, or voice
While I'll touch on all of the five above categories, I'll only focus deeply on one or two elements, just to make sure you have something you may (or may not) implement for improvement.
I'll approach your critique with the compliment sandwich technique: starting on positive notes, before suggesting places to grow, polish, and/or deepen your ideas, then tying it up with another one of the story's strengths. My goal is not just to make your writing better, but invest in your confidence as a writer, too.
You can request multiple units for stories of more than 2000 words. In the case of larger stories, I'll write separate critiques for every roughly 2000 words, varying my stopping points depending on chapter breaks. I'll also critique as you write, if you're working on a larger project and need a reader for inspiration.
All I ask is you don't sent me a cluster of separate stories. If you have four stories of 500 words each, those should be four separate critiques. Also, please note this is a critique, not a proofread.
You'll receive my critique as PDF between 250 and 500 words in length.
Training & Qualifications
I taught college-level fiction writing while in graduate school. I currently teach college composition. I regularly give students feedback on their writing as part of my career; but I'm inundated with critiquing academic writing, so I'm hoping Simbi will let me interact with fiction more.
Availability & Preferences
I edit writing on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I'll address Simbi before my Wattpad and WordPress projects. My only slow time is December and May, when I'm grading fat stacks of student essays.
