Learn Macrame in Just 4 Easy Knots
Did you know most macrame designs use just 4 knots? The patterns get more and more complex as you learn to master these knots, and work them into creative masterpieces.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to do a wall hanging macrame piece or a plant hanger. I offer 30 minutes of mentoring. For bigger projects, you may need 2 session.
I will show you the four knots:
1) Lark's head knot (and reverse lark's head knot)
2) Square knots (right and left facing)
3) Spiral Stitch (just a repetition of half of a square knot)
4) Double Half Hitch (or Clove Hitch Knot)
So you can follow along as I go, I highly recommend you buy your own 100% cotton cord to start (which you can buy off of Amazon for like $16). For the top, you can either find a fairly straight (and pest free!) stick to hang it on, or you can go and get a smooth wooden dowel from a craft store.
I use a nail that is already in my wall from a picture hanging to hang the macrame piece on as I work on it. If I'm doing a long piece, I will find a higher nail, then stand on a step stool to reach it when I'm working on the top of the piece. I suggest you find whatever ergonomic solution that works best for you, based on the size of your piece, your home, and your body.
If you have a design in mind for your piece, you can send me a picture of what you want to work on (or learn how to replicate on your own). Otherwise, we can just create as we go, learning the different knots and manipulating them into designs.
Training & Qualifications
I am self-taught using YouTube and my own imagination!
I started off in macrame by embarking on a huge project for a bedroom (the beige / turquoise one in the pictures), which I did in a variety of 100% premium wools. I chose the wool for its sound dampening qualities, but it made it an incredibly expensive project and was not the easiest to work with since it stretches as you work. Also, the large scale of the piece made it an incredibly physical and time-consuming one.
I can teach where you can be flexible and creative with the knots, and also give you pointers on some of the mistakes I made while I was figuring it out so you know what to avoid!
