Voice Dialogue was developed by psychologists Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone in the 1970s. And as they describe in their book Embracing our selves Voice Dialogue is a "communications tool, as well as a method that can be used for getting to know ourselves better".
Voice Dialogue is a way to meet and understand different parts of yourself. It is based on the idea that each person is made up of a variety of inner "selves", each with its own desires, beliefs, and perspectives. These selves influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, often without us realizing it. Some common inner selves include The Perfectionist, The Pleaser, The Pusher, The Protector, The Inner Critic, The Responsible Self, The Rational Mind, The Frightened Child, The Playful Child and The Vulnerable Child. We identify with some of these selves, and reject some.
This over-identification with some selves and the loss of wholeness that comes from the rejection of others, can create imbalances and blind spots. Voice Dialogue is about embracing all the selves. The goal is to bring awareness to all these different parts of ourselves and to understand how they influence your life. By engaging in dialogue with these inner selves, you can start to differentiate between them and observe their individual motivations and roles. This process can help you gain insight into internal conflicts, make conscious choices, and live with more balance, rather than being automatically driven by any single self.
In their book Embracing Our Selves, Hal and Sidra Stone explore the concept of "demonic" aspects within us as a metaphor for the powerful, often challenging or repressed parts of our psyche. They don’t mean "demonic" in a supernatural or evil sense; rather, it’s a way of describing parts of ourselves that we might see as destructive, troubling, or in opposition to our conscious desires. These "demonic" selves can include traits we reject or disown, such as anger, jealousy, or selfishness, which we may struggle to integrate into our self-image.
These disowned parts often carry energy, insight, or qualities (like assertiveness or independence) that we can reclaim in healthier ways. When we recognize and learn to work with these so-called "demonic" parts, they can transform into constructive forces within us, contributing to a more balanced, integrated personality.
If you are struggling with an internal conflict or are feeling scared\overwhelmed by any of your parts, I guide you and securely hold the space to fully meet and experience these internal parts of you through a dialogue and a felt sense in your body. Through this process so much understanding of your different parts is experienced with full awareness and in turn creates a harmony in your inner world and between your Selves. This dance of the selves is an amazing process and you see the dynamics of the world around you shift as your internal world changes.
My name is Janice, and I’ve been facilitating Voice Dialogue sessions for 5 years. On my own journey, I discovered Voice Dialogue in 2020 and completed my Voice Dialogue training in February in 2024 and I have facilitated over a hundred sessions for others and myself. Alongside building my practice I am also a craft teacher.
I am passionate about personal growth and elevating my level of connection with myself and others. I’ve been learning and practicing Non Violent Communication (NVC) since 2011 and I use this method, alongside Voice Dialogue, in deepening the understanding of myself and others. I have led over 30 women’s circles where I coached women in authentic relating, active listening, using NVC, and teaching\exploring Voice Dialogue.
