IT Support and Computer Repair
I'm a tech savvy hardware nerd who loves building computers and fixing things. I'm a lot more fun to work with than tech support on the phone, and fixing things that are old but still good is my passion. Sometimes it's just not cost effective to fix old hardware, but most of the time I can take that old slow computer and turn it into something awesome. I can fix contemporary hardware too, but personally I don't like that modern computers are expected to be disposable and replaced every few years. That's not good for our planet, our wallets, or our economy. If the companies making these moves thought ahead, they'd realize it's not great for their longevity either. In the meantime, I will continue to prefer hardware and software that is long lived and reliable, even if it isn't the coolest new thing.
Training & Qualifications
I studied linguistics and psychology in college, which may seem like they have nothing to do with computers, but I was cobbling together a cognitive science curriculum from the classes available. The best way to do that was linguistics, psychology, a few comp sci classes, and some independent study on Artificial Intelligence with the Computer Science department. I can't even pick a major without tinkering with it ;)
If it helps my cred any, my team won the 2014 Baltimore Hackathon in the Hardware category. I was programming microcontrollers on that project though, not fixing computers. I'm pretty versatile is what I'm saying. Sometimes I also fix audio equipment for my music friends and the local marching band. It's not my specialty, but a broken jack is a broken jack, even if I don't know what all those buttons on the mixer do.
Availability & Preferences
I am usually free during the day when my kids are in school. I can be available via internet around 9pm EST after the kids are in bed too, but I can't go out at that time. I can usually take appointments for repair at just about any time with enough notice to find a sitter, but I am not usually available for last minute gigs because of the constraints of single motherhood.
I volunteer at the school all the time. I do have a mohawk, but I promise I'm not sketchy; I'm the kind of punk that writes letters to legislators and wears political tshirts, not the kind of punk that steals and vandalizes (although I have been known to put wiggle eyes on things). I am happy to meet you in a public place before exchanging services, especially since you'll probably want me to come to your place to fix things. I know I wouldn't just hand my computer to a stranger on the internet and expect to get it back!
