Foraging & Wild Edible Plants Walk
We will go for a walk outdoors to identify edible wild plants. I will only say that something is safe to eat if I am certain of its identity. We will talk about ethical foraging, the best (and worst) types of places to forage, and identify some of the most common wild edible plants. Are you wondering if any of the weeds in your backyard are edible? Let me take a look and I will tell you if any of them are. We can go for a walk at a safe and public outdoor park to see what grows there.
Here is a freebie that everyone should know: Dandelions are edible! Almost every part of a dandelion is edible, when harvested at the right time of year. From dandelions alone, you can have salad greens, fritters, a coffee-like beverage, and a cooked vegetable. Does that make you curious to know what else is out there?
If I have something recently foraged or prepared from foraging, I will bring along a sample for you to try!
Learning about foraging brings a new level of connection to the natural world, makes going for walks more interesting, provides you with a greater range of foods to eat, and gives you a new and free hobby.
Who can benefit from this?
-People who know nothing about foraging, because you can learn about free and nutritious food growing all around!
-People who already know about foraging, because we can share our knowledge with each other and perhaps become foraging buddies!
-Me, because I enjoy going for walks, sharing what I know, learning from others, and exploring different places for edible plants.
Training & Qualifications
I am a hobby forager, who has learned through attending in person workshops/guided walks, reading books by expert foragers, online research, and eating and cooking what I find (always testing with a small amount first).
I am NOT an expert. As such, I will never recommend for you to eat something if I am not sure. If I do not know about a certain plant, I will tell you that, but I will also give suggestions for where to learn more.
Availability & Preferences
Walks are available during daylight hours in decent weather. Weekday early evenings and weekend afternoons are preferred.

Ilana is so pleasant to chat with and gave me some great advice on where to get cool stuff on Simbi for my rats. I look forward to talking with her more in the future. If you get a chance to work with her, I recommend you take it!
About Ilana Rubin
I am a life enthusiast and non profit human services manager, with passions for: dance (belly dance/Middle Eastern dance, east coast swing/lindy, blues dance, and open to more), photography (beginner ...and wanting to learn), foraging (Hey plants! I eat you!), cooking, pets (I have three CUTE rats currently), wildlife, gardening, and more. I have dabbled in other hobbies at one time or another in the past, and then put them down to pick up something else. Latent hobbies include: flute, scherenschnitte (paper cutting), sewing...and I recently fixed my own washer with the help of YouTube (before joining Simbi)! I am always looking to enhance and expand my skill set while learning, sharing, and having fun! **I am currently taking a little longer than usual to do some things, but I will 100% get them done! Please bear with me while I go through this time period. Thank you!** I have been having a fabulous time on Simbi so far, and look forward to learning and sharing even more. If there is anything you are curious about that is not listed as a specific service, please send me a message to see if we can work something out together. Yes, I am still looking for additional unique tips for frugal living! Scroll down on this page and click on my request for more information.show moreOpen to other proposals
