Power Public Speaking
25
I will provide you with powerful public speaking techniques. Public speaking is hard for most people, but what most people don't understand is that no one is born a public speaker: it is a skill that following a number of steps. I will show you those steps.
Option 1 (you are already familiar with a version of this): You are ready for that presentation, and you know your material. The day is here. You dress up. You show up. You approach the podium and then it begins. Your mouth dries (speaking will be harder, and you are already dreading it), your hands shake (you won't be able to hold a paper and read it, or point with the laser, and you know it), you start sweating (and you think, "I hope they don't notice I'm nervous"); you look at your audience and suddenly another distracting thought: "Am I overdressed? Am I underdressed? Are they looking at me funny?" You power through the presentation without knowing how you did, and all you can think is "Oh, for the love of all that's good, let this torture end!"
Or, Option 2: you step right up, a spring in your step, looking at your audience confidently, with a knowing smile, and proceed to wrap the audience with an amazing story, the room is enthralled, and you leave feeling electrified. A polished presentation follows a number of steps, and great presenters, although each has a unique style, they all rely on some well-known techniques. I will teach you the techniques I was taught through the drama department (I'm a cognitive neuroscientist), the same techniques I use to teach large classrooms, job presentations, or one on one conversations.
A 25-minute session will cover: techniques for nervousness; readiness (relaxation and poise exercises), delivery (voice projection and diction exercises), and a 5 minute evaluation of your skills.
Other possible areas to cover (depending on the evaluation) could be: content, and structure of presentation, design of effective PP (don't put your audience to sleep!).
