About Chris Barton

I am an intensely curious and adventurous person. I come from the mountains of Colorado, but I believe that the future of the human race is in cities, and therefore love both cities and their inhabita...nts. I am an academic and a philosopher (or so people tell me), but I believe that while both those things are important in the abstract, they are most important when applied in the concrete to the plethora of problems facing humanity today. I am an optimist and a bit of an idealist about what is possible, but I recognize the complex realities of the problems we face. I believe in our ability to solve the problems put before us, no matter how large. Or at least, we really have to choice but to try our hardest. I work hard at the things I care about, the difficult part is delegating my time between the many things that fall into that category. Lately my interests have focused on the social dimensions of science and knowledge production: What do we know? How do we know it? Who is 'we'? And how does this knowledge effect us? I've also become fascinated with the transformative power of entrepreneurship, and am starting a non-profit knowledge production enterprise with the aim to help sustainability practitioners effectively confront the world's problems. show more
