"Photography is dead." -Nietzsche
O.K. He didn't say that. But I did. When's the last time you've seen a photograph? Or an image, even? Years ago, right? Exactly. There's a reason they're few and far between: because they add nothing to the world. They're visual speed bumps, slowing us down from what we should really be paying attention: blank space and words. Walls, web pages, magazine covers (and whatever's inside magazines) should all be blank, or filled with delicately crafted Shakespearean sonnets (or shit like that).
Alright again, I'm lying. Photographs are everywhere because they tell a story in the blink of an eye. They hold power. They can influence a sale, convince someone to donate to a cause, or sway a shy person to send a message to a prospective date.
Whether you want to wow your Instagram followers or Facebook friends, or generate some cash flow to your business or non-profit, you've landed on this page because you want to know how to take better photographs. I can help.
The first step will be to determine what you'll be taking photos for. The second: figuring out what level of photographic knowledge and skill you have. I give lessons for beginners and intermediate-ers. Each lesson will be conducted on Skype and runs around 45 mins to an hour, depending on how many questions you may have along the way.
In the beginners course I'll go over Composition, or how to frame a photograph to get your message across, and the totally-breakable (but important to know) rules that yield the most aesthetically pleasing images. The Rule of Thirds. Horizontal/vertical/diagonal? Wide angle or close up? Directional light, when to use a flash, and what color combinations work.
In the intermediate course, I'll go over the basics of the fancy cameras, the stuff that usually intimidates people: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. I'll discuss some really cool stuff you can do while having your camera in the "Manual" or "M" setting on your camera. Please note: I might not be able to tell you how to use your specific camera. Canon SLRs and DSLRs are my wheelhouse, but I might be able to help you figure yours out. But full disclosure: I haven't been able to keep up on all changes and advances in technology.
What I, unfortunately, will not cover: Photo editing. My quest is to help ensure that you will need to do as little of that as possible, by framing your subject(s) properly and working with light. There are many programs out there, and a lot of free information on how to use them, so I've chosen to do something else.
Training & Qualifications
I'm an award-winning photographer with over 17 years of experience. I've worked for newspapers and non-profits, bringing my photographic touch to their pages. But full disclosure: that was all a while ago. I work in solar now, but photography is still a passion and I shoot as much as I can. I received a B.A. in Studio Art, focus in Photography, and have used it in nearly every job since. I've also taught several photography workshops.
Availability & Preferences
I'm usually free on week nights and weekends.
