Sew 14' Kitchen Bench Cushion

Our 14' L-shaped kitchen bench needs cushions.
1. Need advice on the best design for the cushion. I have 2 compartments in the bench that open via the seat, and a 20" short end of the L, so there's some logistics to think through.
2. Need advice on the best materials to use, considering budget, toddler-impact, and style.
3. Materials need to be bought. Is online best? I've seen good prices at walmart, but if you're a sewing maven, you probably know what's best here!
4. Upholstery material needs to be cut, fabric needs to be sewn. I have an idea that I want waterproof cushions (maybe a PUL covering?) and a fabric covering that zips off so that I can throw them in the wash.
